[ at least he isn't in the tights, which, like, actually isn't that bad according to peter. then again, he's running around in the x-men uniform which isn't exactly all that flattering either. thankfully, he isn't this time, just in a band tee and ripped jeans, his trademark jacket draped on the back of his chair; he's tapping rapidly away at his phone when kal comes in and doesn't look up, but there's the beginnings of a smile on his face as he finishes up his texting. ]
I was saving it for my friend, [ (on a pizza date with superman don't wait up for me i didn't ask, but okay, peter. thanks scott you the best xoxo) he puts his phone away and finally looks up. ] And it looks like he's here. Hi.
[ he'll even stretch out his leg to nudge the chair out with his foot, inviting kal to sit. ]
[ Grinning as he takes a seat, Kal looks over the pizza already there... and a little more pressingly, at the stack of metal dishes that're the evidence of how much Peter's already eaten.
It's hard not to let out the fondest little laugh. ] This deal must be amazing for your metabolism.
[ Kal himself doesn't have to eat; he gets most of his energy from the sun like a plant. But he likes the feeling of affection that eating with someone gives, and so picks up a slice of Hawaiian pizza and takes a bite from it crust side first. ]
How long have you been here? [ The first bite of pineapple makes him shiver from head to toe, like a cat whose fur's fluffed all over. ]
[ his tone is dry as he reaches for another slice, folding it in half length-wise before taking a bite. it's true the staff around keeps giving his mountain of metal dishes wary looks, especially when it doesn't seem like he'll be stopping anytime soon — at least now that kal's here. ]
I dunno, half an hour maybe? [ he catches that little shiver and has to hide his smile behind his soda. ] They had to fire up the oven a few times after I got here.
[ Oh, it's difficult to resist laughing, so Clark doesn't. It's a welcome distraction from the stupid sensation in his tongue, anyway, after the pineapple riled up all his sensitivities. ]
"A few times". [ It's a whole lot of fond disbelief. ]
I thought I was doing a good deed, telling you about this whole deal. [ He takes another bite of pizza, speaking with his mouth half-full. ] Should've known you'd beat me to it.
[ clark laughs and something inside peter puffs up a little with accomplishment, and it takes effort to not grin too widely around his mouthful of pizza. the pineapple bursts on his tongue, bright and sweet, made a little more sweeter at the fondness he can hear in kal's tone. ]
I mean, if it wasn't you, I would've found out from someone else eventually. [ kurt, maybe. he doubts scott would have. ] But it's sweet that you thought of me.
[ No matter how many times Kal lets a pineapple touch his tongue, he shivers with the inability to get used to it. It probably makes the smile on his face look a tad less charming than he'd hoped. ]
For example, just earlier I was wondering how your day was going. [ Kal shifts, nudging Peter lightly with his elbow. ] Four different class sessions today, right? That can't be easy.
[ see, the thing is kal is always charming in his own way. whether he's in the tights or dressed down in a collared shirt and trousers. it's very him, and peter likes that. that, and how he can say things like i was wondering how your day was going so plainly and simply and mean it completely.
kal keeps shivering though and admittedly, a part of him feels a little bad about it — it's gotta be at least uncomfortable, right? so he switches the remainder of the hawaiian pizza with pepperoni instead; kal would've been able to see him do it despite him using his speed, but it's fine. ]
Mm, [ he shrugs. ] Why do you think I'm here treating us to pizza?
[ Both Kal's brows raise when Peter goes to get a new pizza, finishing the last of his first slice of Hawaiian while he's gone. He doesn't even bother to hide his smile when Peter comes back-- doesn't even try looking away, knowing that Peter'll see it and wanting him to.
Kal lets out a hum at the question, swallowing the food in his mouth. ] I thought you did that because you liked being around me. [ But he knows that isn't the real answer, and then reaches for a piece of the pepperoni on his slice, removing each one to gather them close to the tip of the slice. ]
I'm sorry it was a rough day. But four lectures-- that's a big deal. [ His leg shifts slightly, knee brushing against Peter's own where he's seated. ]
I'm glad you made it to the end of the day, Peter. You've certainly brightened mine by being here.
Edited (sorry i keep editing and it just. continues to be gay) 2020-01-22 14:21 (UTC)
[ kal's smiling at him and peter suddenly feels a little put on the spot. not exactly embarrassed, but he thinks his ears are starting to get a little too warm. he thinks he's always craved this kind of attention, but he never really knows what to do when he actually gets it.
in any case, he nudges kal's knee back in return and shakes his head. ]
I forgot about it already. [ and it's true — it's hard to dwell on it when kal's telling him things he could find in a hallmark card. ] Glad you're here too. Next time you wanna take me out for pizza, all you gotta do is ask, okay?
[ All he has to do is ask? Kal considers this as he eats the end of his pizza and its absurd stack of pepperoni.
So he turns a bit, making it so he's looking at Peter properly instead of looking to his side for it, and there is the briefest brush of the tips of his fingers against the side of Peter's wrist. ]
How would I go about that? [ It sounds like a genuine question. ] "Peter, will you go out with me?"
[ there's a couple of things that need to be addressed here — the first, kal's little brush of his fingers against peter's wrist distracts him for a moment, a tingle racing from the back of his neck and down his spine like he's been shocked by storm. the second, peter wasn't expecting kal to actually ask right now and in that way, which means he almost chokes on the soda he was sipping, the drink going down the wrong pipe and making him cough loudly so he doesn't actually choke for real.
he had the sense to turn away at least, so now he just looks like a loser doubled over and wheezing. ]
[ Kal looks worried for a split-second, a firm hand landing on Peter's upper back to soothe him through his coughing. Of all the looks he'd expected to see on him when his attention shifts back, however, the thoughtful one isn't on the top of his list...
And again, as is always the case with Peter Maximoff (which is refreshing, really, in more ways than Kal with all his knowledge of the Earth's languages can ever hope to articulate), he laughs, the hand on his back slipping to tap his bicep, his forearm, and then his palm.
Then it slides, Kal's fingers twining easily with Peter's own. ]
I'll get back to you later, then. [ He grins, but certainly doesn't hesitate to draw Peter's hand up, lips brushing softly over his knuckles as he looks at him through his lashes. ] I think you deserve at least some treats, Mr. Maximoff.
Mm, nope. [ it's funny, how he can feel a little nervous and restless, but relaxed at the same time once kal laughs again. his skin tingles warmly where kal touches him, and when he laces their fingers together, peter finds himself staring at their linked hands. ] No, trust me. This is, uh— this is a lot already.
[ his breath catches when he feels kal's breath on his knuckles first and then his lips, and peter's heart does some weird flipping thing in his chest that he didn't think it was capable of. his gaze has snapped back up to kal's face, and he almost regrets it when he sees the way he's looking at him. almost.
earlier, when he thought that he wanted this sort of attention, he didn't expect this much from someone he admired, someone he respected. someone who really understands what it's like to run on an entirely different frequency from everyone else, and that feeling of relief when you finally find the right channel to listen to. but that relief is undermined by how he forgets how to breathe for half a second, and how he thinks, for the nth time, that kal's eyes are an unfair shade of blue. ]
But, I'm not gonna say no if you decide to get them anyway.
[ Peter looks at him, really looks at him, and the confidence in Kal's grin turns a little softer, maybe even shy. Superman doesn't really get shy, not necessarily, but Peter knows him, and it makes Kal feel vulnerable in the most exciting way.
He understands him, which gives an unbearable rush of emotion, and if it weren't for Kal's control, he might have kissed him on the spot.
As it is now, he only chuckles. ] Then we'll put that on my tab. [ His thumb sweeps fondly over Peter's knuckles, and though he lowers their hands he doesn't let go. Now that he's had a taste of it he doesn't want to, not until he really has to.
Peter is so sturdy that Kal can hold firm enough to really feel him, and it's a sensation he appreciates so wholly it makes his whole heart warm. ]
...Friday. Can I see you again on Friday? [ Kal's head tilts slightly. ] Before I have to do my patrols.
[ kal keeps touching him and holding his hand, and peter doesn't really mind it, not at all, but he also can't help but feel a surge of emotion well up in his chest. kal's hand is bigger than his, broader where peter's fingers are longer and a little more slender; it's warm, comforting in a way he's never really thought of before, and he catches himself thinking how he managed to live his whole life without holding kal's hand.
that restlessness he always feels, the impatience that's become such a part of him that it's as constant as breathing, quiets a little. there's nothing but his heartbeat in his ears, the steady sweep of kal's thumb over his knuckles, the firmness and steadiness of his palm against his. ]
Yeah, [ it's breathed out with a rush of air, like the world had lifted itself from his chest. ] Or, you know. We could meet up after your patrols, too.
[ After his patrols. Were Kal a different man, he would've been flustered by the concept of Peter wanting to be with him longer, but as it is he feels humbled-- feels like he's blessed to be granted such a gift. ]
Mmm. [ It's this low, pleased sound, and Kal dips his head in a nod, glancing back up through his lashes as his smile takes on a more crooked look. ] We could, if you wanted.
[ Time isn't really a problem for him. Between the two of them, with how slow the world really turns, Kal feels like they have hours and hours and hours to spare-- hundreds of them in a day and then some. ]
You could come with me to see the sun. [ The corners of his eyes crinkle at the thought, at bringing Peter up beyond the clouds in Kal's most favourite place to be when the sun decides to rise. ]
[ there goes his heart doing that weird flipping thing again. kal's eyes are already unfairly pretty, but then he has to go and look at him like that and smile like that, and if peter's ears weren't red before they are now. ]
I'm just saying, it's an option, you know. [ peter turns in his seat until he's facing kal properly, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees and bringing their linked hands closer to his face. he keeps staring at them, he doesn't know why. ] But if you're tired after a long day and you aren't feeling it, that's okay too.
[ peter gets it — it's not easy being around him. he's impatient at worst and restless at best, and sometimes that's too much for most people. kal isn't most people, obviously, but peter doesn't want to push it. the last thing he wants is for him to get tired of peter too. ]
I've only flown in a jet before, but I get the feeling you're talking about something different.
Come on. [ Kal's tone is gentle, patient as it always is. ] If anything, you're more like a battery charger than a drainer.
[ Besides, it's the sun that he gets his power from-- whatever real physical fatigue he feels will be gone as soon as he soaks in the light. It's hardly the worst scenario; without hesitation, Kal would slog through entire fields of kryptonite if it meant reaching Peter somewhere, anywhere, that Peter would want him to be.
He says none of this. The way Peter keeps considering their hands is something he relates to wholeheartedly, and the only reason Kal doesn't do the same is because Peter's face is a touch more beautiful to look at. ]
Up above the clouds is my favourite place to be first thing in the morning. [ His smile turns the slightest bit sheepish. ] I'd love to take you, but only if you want to, too.
I mean, if all it takes is pizza and holding your hand, I'm down for it.
[ he knows it's not the real answer, as he covers kal's hand with his other one. kal can probably feel the nervous tingle in his hands, the way his pulse spikes a little every time he glances up and sees kal still looking at him. that says more than anything he could actually say. ]
So you're gonna fly me up there with you. [ it's actually. kind of cool? really dangerous, but he knows kal won't drop him. ] It's a good thing I'm not scared of heights.
[ Kal takes that as a "yes", and he grins so wide it turns into a laugh at the end there-- it's a good thing I'm not scared of heights, goodness. Remembering how fast Peter is, he supposes he shouldn't be surprised he'd choose to run circles instead of meeting him head-on. ]
If you decide you are halfway, [ he teases ] I promise I'll bring you back down.
You know, if holding you to make it better doesn't work.
[ His thumb strokes Peter's knuckles in one soft sweep, and the warmth of two hands on his own-- the feel of two hand on his own, whose owner moves so fast Kal feels every detail of it-- is more grounding than any anchor. ]

[ Indeed-- it doesn't take long before Kal is at the establishment, dressed (for once) in a regular button-down and some simple trousers.
He still looks like Superman, though, with the tell-tale curl on his forehead. But at least he isn't in the tights? ]
